Rivera

The de Corato family roots go deep into the agriculture of Puglia. Here, in the countryside of Andria, Sebastiano de Corato founded the Azienda Vinicola Rivera in the late 1940s, inspired by a vision of realising, and bringing to the world’s attention, the enormous viticultural potential of the Castel del Monte area.

The winery’s winemaking philosophy is rigorously applied to every step of the process: vineyard management, grape harvest, winemaking, maturation and bottling; the most up-to-date viticultural and oenological practices are married to the deepest respect for natural processes, with all activities focused on achieving environmental and economic sustainability and on continuous improvement in quality.

RIVERA – Marese Bombino Bianco Castel del Monte DOC

Rivera sets the challenge of making a monovarietal Bombino Bianco which would capture all of those grape’s qualities, instead of blending it with other varieties, as it is customary. The ultra-ripeness of the harvested fruit, evident in the wine’s complex, rich fragrances, finds alovely counterpoint in the crisp acidity typical of Bombino Bianco. This Marese is a lively, refreshing wine to be enjoyed young, especially when partnered with “antipasti” and seafood dishes.

Green tinged straw yellow; crisp, fruity bouquet, with notes of re-net apple; fruit-rich palate, well balanced, with a tangy vein of acidity.

RIVERA – Preludio N.1 Chardonnay Castel del Monte DOC

Preludio n°1 is the first Chardonnay ever planted in Apulia. The idea of bringing a typically “northern” vine, such as Chardonnay, into Apulia, represented a great winemaking challenge for our winery. The transfer required long years of experimentation; first in the vineyard, researching the correct stock and the most appropriate training system, and then, once the vine was acclimatised, in the wine cellar, to identify the right time to harvest and the most suitable system of wine-making.
The wine that has resulted, the Preludio n°1, is one of the most prestigious in our range of production.

Straw yellow in colour; intense, multi-layered bouquet, with notes of pear and peach blossom; crisp, full and fruity on the palate, with good length and complexity.

VINTAGE 2023

Vinous – 90
The 2023 Chardonnay Preludio N°1 is delicate and understated, showing hints of green melon, mint and cardamom. It opens with a pretty inner sweetness, soft textures, ripe orchard fruits and pretty inner florals. The 2023 tapers off fresh, saline and herbal, with nuances of candied lemon.

Taking advantage of the most modern winemaking practices, Rivera has succeeded in crafting a distinctive rosé that reflects the unique characteristics of the Bombino Nero grape, a variety that is so peculiar to the Castel del Monte area and so suitable to rosé wine production to have deserved, the only one in Italy, the D.O.C.G. status. The Pungirosa is a crisp, refreshing rosé bursting with flavor, with a forward, vivacious fruitiness that makes it a great companion to most dishes. Enjoy it also as a wonderfully appealing aperitif.

RIVERA – Il Falcone Castel del Monte Riserva DOCG

Il Falcone is one of the most prestigious red wines of Apulia whose name was chosen by Rivera to remember Emperor Frederick II of Swabia who built the castle called Castel del Monte near Andria so that he could indulge his passion for falcony. The wine is obtained with carefully selected grapes sourced from the oldest among the estate’s vineyards.

Dense garnet-red colour; multi-layered bouquet of ripe wild red berry fruit, leather, tobacco and spice; rich palate, austere, very lengthy and well-balanced.

VINTAGE 2020

James Suckling – 91
Dried herbs, sliced chiles and ripe dark cherries on the nose of this juicy red. It’s medium- to full-bodied with medium-chewy tannins and a tasty finish. Drink now.

VINTAGE 2019

Vinous – 91
Dark, rich and oak-inflected, the 2019 Rosso Riserva Il Falcone slowly opens with a dusting of cacao and brown spice, giving way to crushed violets and dried black cherries. This is velvety in texture, showing admirable weight and potency, with masses of ripe red berry fruits that saturate under an air of rosy inner florals. Chalky mineral tones linger through the dramatically long and slightly chewy finale as a pleasantly bitter tinge lingers on. I’d prefer less wood on the nose, but I can’t argue with the balance here. Il Falcone is a blend of 70% Nero di Troia and 30% Montepulciano.

Wine Advocate – 92
This is one of the banner wines of Puglia, recognized far and wide as one of the bottles in the so-called Puglia Wine Renaissance that sparked about two decades ago. The Rivera 2019 Castel del Monte Riserva Il Falcone is 70% Nero di Troia and 30% Montepulciano with fruit selected from across various estate vineyards, such as the Tenuta Rivera, Torre di Bocca, Coppa and Tafuri plots, with a mix of loose calcareous and tuffaceous soils. Fermented in stainless steel and matured in equal parts botti and barrique, this wine offers a lighter and more approachable style compared to the super ripe and jammy wines made further south in the Salento. This is the Castel del Monte area in the northern Murge plateau, home to the Nero di Troia grape; it is considered one of the most prestigious wine areas in the region. This wine is many times more balanced and fresh with tart cherry and plum over a moderate to full mouthfeel. The alcohol content on this production of 110,000 bottles is a contained 13.5%. Now celebrating 40 harvests, this wine points in a positive direction if we are to consider the future of Puglia’s wines.

RIVERA – Cappellaccio Castel del Monte Aglianico Riserva DOC

Aglianico is one of the oldest grape variety in the world, being introducedin Southern Italy by the Ancient Greeks about 3.000 years ago in what they called Enotria or Land of Wine. Today, its qualities are well recognized; for its elegance, ageing potential and complexity of its wines, it has been called “the Nebbiolo of Southern Italy”.
The Cappellaccio Aglianico Riserva takes its name from the thin and hard calcareous crust that is found at around 50 cm under the limestone soils of the Castel del Monte DOC area and that has to be broken in order to allow vines to be planted. Cappellaccio Aglianico Riserva is a wine that fully expresses the outstanding characteristics of Aglianico.

Deep ruby colour; fruity, rich bouquet effectively displaying complex varietal characteristics and the spiciness of the wood in which it has been matured; judiciously tannic but not too aggressive, with good potential for extended development of its latent qualities.

VINTAGE 2020

RIVERA – Puer Apuliae Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva DOC

Puer Apuliae – Son of Puglia in Latin – is a wine of remarkable character and elegance obtained from an almost-forgotten small-berried clone of Nero di Troia, northern Puglia main indigenous varietal, reselected and replanted on the poor calcareous soils of Tafuri vineyard by Rivera.
Modern style winemaking and ageing for 14 months in new French oakbarriques exalt the varietal’s sophisticated blackberry and violet notes andthe rich and full-bodied palate.

Deep ruby color with purple hue; attractive fresh aromas of blackcurrant and violets with delicate notes of incense and star anis; the elegant palate is supported by firm yet polished tannic structure and a long and lingering finish.

VINTAGE 2018

James Suckling – 91
This bold and toasty red has aromas of cedar, walnuts, dried coconut and cherry jam. It’s full-bodied with dusty, woody tannins. Ambitious. Try from 2027

Vinous – 93
The 2018 Nero di Troia Riserva Puer Apuliae blossoms in the glass with sweet spice, violet pastille, chalk dust and blackberries. This is seamless and graceful, with cool-toned wild berry fruits and tactile mineral tones adding lovely form. The 2018 finishes with impressive length as fine tannins frame nuances of lavender, sour citrus and tart black cherries. Aged for 14 months in new French tonneaux and barriques, the Puer Apuliae possesses a lovely integration of oak.

Wine Advocate – 92
Made with 100% Nero di Troia, this wine is named after Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (1194–1250), otherwise known as the “Son of Apulia.” The Rivera 2018 Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva Puer Apuliae pays homage to the famous octagonal fortress Castel del Monte (also featured on Italy’s one cent euro coin) located nearby and built by the emperor. Popular legend ties this native grape to ancient Troia, a town near Foggia, allegedly founded by the Greek hero Diomedes after the Trojan War. This is a balanced and pretty wine with dark currant, blueberry and toasted spice. The aromas are not too intense, and the wine (matured in both barrique and tonneaux) offers a silky, moderate to full mouthfeel. Production is 12,500 heavy glass bottles.

VINTAGE 2017

A spice-forward, macerated-berry blend on the nose of this wine is countered with graphite and a final hint of capsicum. The palate is more strawberries, raspberries and cherries, with black and fresh peppercorns. Tannins cling and acid sings.

RIVERA – Scariazzo Fiano Puglia IGT

Scariazzo is a “single vineyard” white wine made from the Fiano grape.
Fiano is a varietal grape indigenous from Irpinia area, which was known as the Apiana grape, since bees preferred it for its sweetness. The vines are trained and the wine is made in strict accord with Rivera’s long experience and its determination that the wine be the authentic expression of its variety and of its terroir.
The wine is named Scariazzo for the traditional local barrel-vaulted building used to pen sheep. These constructions, which served as stopping-places for the flocks during their annual transhumance movements, were emblematic of the pastoral economy that flourished in northern Puglia until the late 19th century.

Deep straw yellow; rich, complex bouquet with smokynotes and the minerally slate classic to fiano; multilayered palate withan acidity that balances all components.

RIVERA – Lama dei Corvi Chardonnay Castel del Monte DOC

The single vineyard Lama dei Corvi is and elegant and complex white wine that takes its name from the omonimous vineyard, planted on white calcareous gravel that was literally ground out of the calcareous rocks that form the Murgia hills in the northern part of Castel del Monte D.O.C. area.
It is obtained from Chardonnay grapes carefully hand harvested and soft pressed with the must fermented in new French oak barriques, where the wine further ages for 8 months before bottling.Complex and mineral with a fine acidity, shows the potential.

Deep straw yellow in color. Intense, fruity bouquet, richly layered, “subtle vanilla notes to the cream, hazelnut andbaked-apple aromas. Full-bodied, chalky in texture and with deliciouscreaminess.” – James Suckling

VINTAGE 2023

This creamy white has aromas of brioche, baked apples and salted butter. It’s full-bodied with buttery undertones while remaining fresh. Drink now

Vinous – 91
Vanillin spice and white flowers give way to ripe peaches and mint as the 2023 Chardonnay Lama dei Corvi evolves in the glass. Silken textures and polished white pit fruits sweep across the palate, enhanced by tinges of lemon zest and spice. An air of almond custard lingers as the 2023 maintains remarkable freshness, leaving a gentle tug of tannin and tactile mineral tones to resonate.
