Petra

Petra, located in Suverto in Maremma Tuscany, is a project started by Vittorio Moretti alonside his daughter Francesca. When the Moretti Family in 1997 purchased the land to build up Petra, there were already vineyards around the spring hence the decision of exploring the potential of Syrah, Merlot, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot varietals in this particular area of the estate.

Soft, respectful, with a lowimpact, like the overallapproach that leads from thegrapes to
the bottle. In the heart of thehill are the aging chambers (incasks and bottles) and, inaddition to the space reservedto Slavonian oak barrels, a longgallery penetrates deeply andcomes to an end in front of asolid rock wall.

The estate is steeped in a very special ecosystem, whichbreathes and whispers,
permeated by warmth and with anunderground current which pervades the soil and reachesus through the produce of the land – grapes, but a lotmore too.

PETRA – Potenti Toscana IGT

The vineyard where the cabernet grapevines grow enjoys a balance of clay and rocky backbone, and a favorable gradient. These characteristics allow optimal exploitation of the rainfall, which combines with the sea breezes that caress this hillside near the coast to harmonize the natural ripening process of the grapes.

VINTAGE 2022

Wine Spectator – 92
This is broad and succulent, featuring blackberry, black currant, violet and graphite flavors that show a hint of bell pepper. Though this red is mellowing, dusty tannins leave a mouthcoating impression on the long aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2039.

VINTAGE 2021

James Suckling – 93
A pure cabernet sauvignon with currants and spice. Hints of herbs. Medium to full body. Bright and fine. Very pretty fruit and focus. Very fine tannins. Vivid. Bright. Drink in a year or three. Try after 2025.

Wine Enthusiast – 93
The nose is earthy, herbaceous and peppery, yet also cool and fresh. Undertones of sugar plums and blackberries provide a gentle sweetness which unfurls on the palate, while persistent currents of earth and pepper flow through the finish. Tannins are chalky, but delicate, like desert sand.

Wine Spectator – 89
Dense and dripping with dark plum, black currant, iron, tobacco and humus flavors. For such a big red, the tannins are surprisingly velvety. Moderately long finish. Drink now through 2027.

VINTAGE 2020

Wine Enthusiast – 90
A nose of vanilla, cedar and cigar box are joined by herbs—especially bay leaf—and intense white pepper that could almost prompt a sneeze. Blackberries, figs and more herbs come through on the palate, joined by cherry liqueur and sambuca flavors pointed up by substantial heat.

PETRA – Quercegobbe Merlot Toscana IGT

A genuine cru, the origin of the merlot grapes with which this wine is made. Quercegobbe is situated in an ideal position, at the border of the mediterranean shrubland but close by the winery, on a well-ventilated hill looking out over the sea.

VINTAGE 2021

James Suckling – 94
Aromas of blue fruits, orange peel, apricots, and citrus blossom. Medium to full body. Fine and integrated. Lovely lenght and balance. Pure merlot. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast – 92
The nose is savory and piercing, with aromas of tar, stone, balsamic and green and black pepper, with velvety undertones of dark fruit. The nose starts sweet, with more prominent fruit and dark chocolate, but the spicy earthiness of the nose returns just before an intensely peppery finish, which smolders in a nest of finely grained tannins.

Wine Spectator – 93
Though packed with plum, blackberry, earth and cedar aromas and flavors, this red remains fresh and lively, with nervous tannins lingering on the finish. This is balanced, leaving an extended aftertaste of dark fruit and vanilla notes, with a hint of bell pepper. Best from 2026 through 2040. 7,000 cases made, 30 cases imported.

VINTAGE 2020

James Suckling – 92
A tasty young merlot with bright black fruit and a smoky tobacco-leaf note that pervades both the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine, velvety tannins and a slightly steely note from the oak which will dissipate with time. Drinkable now but best to give it a little time.

Wine Enthusiast – 92
The nose on this Tuscan Merlot is all umami at first. Mushrooms, seaweed and moss roll into olives and balsamic vinegar, before a bit of wild cherry and fresh plum skin. Cherries, strawberries and chocolate arrive on the palate even with the savory notes still present, held together with substantial tannins and decisive acid. — Danielle Callegari

Wine Spectator – 93
Drenched with black currant, plum, dark chocolate, earth and toasty oak aromas and flavors, this red is muscular yet vibrant, seeming to relax a bit as it plays out on the lingering finish. Shows fine grip and length. Best from 2025 through 2038. 7,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.
