Campogiovanni – Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

Campogiovanni’s vineyards are situated on the south quadrant of the Montalcino hill, where weather conditions and a particular combination of soils favor optimal ripening of the Sangiovese Grosso grape. Campogiovanni Brunello is absolutely classic in style, averaging three years in Slavonian oak casks and 500-liter tonneaux, then another twelve months in the bottle. It is recognized for its finesse and longevity. Five times award-winning wine in the TOP 100 Wine Spectator.

VINTAGE 2020

James Suckling – 94
Overt, smoky style, with bright red cherries, licorice and a whiff of the Mediterranean. Refined, medium- to full-bodied palate with a tight-knit structure between fruit and acidity and velvety tannins. Good, savory aftertaste. Drinkable now, but will age easily for 5 to 10 years.

Wine Spectator – 92
Menthol, eucalyptus, leather, cherry, plum and earth flavors gather in this fluid red. Solidly built, with assertive tannins and a lingering finish. There’s also a touch of oak spice. Just a bit compact in the end. Best from 2028 through 2043. 5,800 cases made, 1,600 cases imported.

VINTAGE 2019

Falstaff – 92

James Suckling – 93
Aromas of blackberries, flint and matchstick. Medium body with firm, silky tannins and a lightly chewy finish. Structured and polished. Juicy at the end. Drink after 2025.

Wine Advocate – 92
The Campogiovanni 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has a note of toasted oak, smoke and wet slate that gives this vintage a heavier and more concentrated approach. The fruit feels ripe and dry with blackberry, baked plum and dark prune. This is a near-term wine with chalky tannins offered in a generous release of 90,000 bottles.

Wine Spectator – 93
There’s an exotic boysenberry note to the fruit in this red, along with flavors of raspberry and kirsch, shaded by eucalyptus and wild rosemary, plus a chalky mineral element. Yet this remains slightly austere, with dense, linear tannins leaving a grip on the finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 3,500 cases made, 1,750 cases imported.

Il Quercione

Campogiovanni – Il Quercione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG

Produced only in exceptional growing years, this Riserva is considered by San Felice to be the finest expression of its Campogiovanni terroir. Carefully-selected clusters of Sangiovese Grosso from its 2.5-hectare Il Quercione vineyard yield a wine that effortlessly marries together depth, elegance, and authenticity of style, plus a remarkable capacity for lengthy ageing.

Very deep ruby red; releases remarkably emphatic fragrances of ripe berries, spice, cocoa powder, and tanned leather. Very full in the mouth, lean in character but with warm alcohol and ripe, juicy tannins. Ideal partner to mixed grills, game, dishes with mushrooms or truffles, and aged cheeses.

VINTAGE 2019

Falstaff – 93

James Suckling – 94
An intense and perfumed wine with aromas of mint, bright red cherries, toast and a leafy touch. Medium- to full-bodied, it shows a creamy and supple attack with long, refreshing acidity and grainy, youthful tannins that are well tamed. Drinkable now, but best from 2026

Wine Spectator – 93
Intense aromas and flavors of cherry, plum, eucalyptus, menthol and tobacco mark this expressive red. Fleshy, succulent and dense, with burly tannins. This is also well-balanced, the lasting impression being one of sweet, ripe fruit. Offers plenty of punch. Best from 2028 through 2045. 540 cases made, 120 cases imported.

Rosso di Montalcino

Campogiovanni – Rosso di Montalcino DOC

In the latter half of the 1990s, six hectares were planted to Sangiovese for Rosso di Montalcino DOC on the Campogiovanni estate. This wine amply exhibits the great versatility of Sangiovese, which can produce high-quality results even in a wine less structured and complex than Brunello. This beautifully-balanced Rosso di Montalcino exhibits elegant aromas and lively, appealing flavors on the palate.

Ruby in appearance, a medium-bodied wine with fragrances of cherry, blackberry, and cedarwood. Crisp and lively, with a silky texture and a seemingly endless finish. Perfect with meat-sauced pastas with mushroom or truffles, dishes of pork or sauced veal.

VINTAGE 2023

James Suckling – 91
This wine shows some complexity, with traditional aromas of raspberries, rhubarb, minerals, sweet violets and earth. Light- to medium-bodied, it’s crunchy with tight chalky tannins, crisp acidity and a polished finish. Drink or hold.

VINTAGE 2021

James Suckling – 90
Earthy berries, oranges and a hint of dried bark on the nose. Juicy and nicely savory on the palate with a medium body and firm tannins. Drink now.

Wine Advocate – 90
Showing a darkish ruby hue, the Campogiovanni 2021 Rosso di Montalcino has bold fruit flavors and lots of dark cherry on immediate offer. This is a nicely saturated Sangiovese with enough texture on the mid-palate to match a hearty bean soup or roast pork. Fresh acidity seals the deal. This is a good value offer, with 9,000 bottles released.
